Electric Rate - FAQ

Electric Rate Option as Your Retail Electric Provider - FAQ

Why choose Electric Rate?
Price, convenience, and LOCAL personal customer service all combine to give our customers the best experience possible.

What customers does Electric Rate serve? We are currently serving both residential and commercial customers across Texas

Will I still get the same reliable electric service to my home or small business?
Yes. It's important to know that the TDSP will still deliver the electricity to your home or business. Existing power lines and meters will stay in place and continue to be maintained by the TDSP. You will pay your local utility's transportation and distribution charges (T&D) for using their power lines and meters which will appear on the Electric Rate Bill (we pass those charges through and DO NOT mark up the cost for that service as regulated by the PUC).

Can you tell me about environmentally friendly or green electricity?
Did you know that 80% of Texas' criteria pollutant emissions–particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and lead – come from electricity generation using fossil fuels? This means the traditional electricity we use at home and at work is impacting our environment. Electric Rate makes it easy to make a difference for our environment with our Green Earth 100% Renewable Energy Service Plan, along with other environmentally friendly energy options and tips for your home.

Will my house or business need different metering or wires?
No, Electric Rate uses the exact meter and wiring which now exists at your home, business, and in your neighborhood. The wiring and meter at your house or business are regulated by the Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas, and will be operated by the same distribution line crews that have always served your area (your local TDSP).

If you use the same wires and pay the same regulated charges, how can Electric Rate provide cheaper rates than Reliant Energy?
The delivery and metering of electricity only account for about 20% of the cost to provide service. The remaining 80% of the cost is completely competitive, and different for each Retail Electric Provider. Because Electric Rate Energy does not have large corporate overhead and costly sports sponsorships or celebrity endorsement, we can keep our costs down and pass the savings onto the people that actually need the savings – YOU!

Why is Electric Rate able to offer rates lower than Reliant Energy?
Electric Rate has built its company with a focus on maintaining a very low cost structure. We do not have huge advertising and marketing costs (such as naming rights to a stadium). We have also worked hard to negotiate the purchase of wholesale power from power plant generators at very reasonable prices. By doing these things, Electric Rate is able to pass along the savings to its customers by providing lower rates.

Is there a chance I will lose power when I switch to Electric Rate?
No, there will be no interruption of service if you switch to Electric Rate.

What is deregulation?
Deregulation in Texas started back in 2002 for the retail market and made it possible for energy companies to compete for your business, breaking up the monopolies and driving prices lower for the consumer.

What is an REP?
A Retail Electric Provider (REP) is a company registered with the state through the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to sell energy directly to the public.

Will a deposit be required for me to sign up?
In some cases... yes. If you do not have much credit history or have had a few bumps in the road in the past you may be required to submit a deposit when getting started. This will be determined during the enrollment process.

Will you check my credit when I sign up?
Yes, Electric Rate will do a credit check to determine if a deposit is required.

How long does the switch take?
A switch takes up to 4-6 weeks because it works with your regular meter cycle. You will still get at least one more bill from your current provider. This timeframe is standard with all Retail Electric Providers.

Do I need to contact my current provider when switching?
NO, Electric Rate take care of all the details but it is always a good idea to refer back to your current provider's Terms of Service to see if anything specific is required from you. Our terms require 30 day notice to avoid a penalty on our Month to Month plan so your provider may have a simular stipulation, which only would affect the time it takes to complete the switch.

What will I pay per kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity based on 1,000 kWh of average monthly usage?
That will vary according to your preference of variable or fixed rate plans and the area you live. Contract or month to month is also a contributing factor.

Does this rate include everything, including the electricity cost, the transmission and distribution charges, fuel charges, if any, as well as the monthly customer charge or other fees?
The average rate includes the energy charge, transmission and distribution charges, $7.95 service fee only if you are billed less than 1000 kWh on any invoice and the recurring payment discount. The average rate does not include taxes/regulatory fees, which are standard for all Retail Electricity Providers

Is this offer a fixed rate offer or a variable rate offer? If it is a variable rate offer, how can it change and how do I find out when the rate will change?
We offer both, a 12 month fixed energy rate contract and a month to month variable rate plan which you can choose based on your needs. Our variable rate is based on the market commodity of natural gas. You can view the current rates on our website daily and you will also see rate fluctuations, if any, on your invoices.

Is there a contract and if so, how long is it?
If you choose our one of our fixed plans, the terms vary anywhere from 3-36 months. We also have several month to month plans available.

What are my payment options?
You can pay online through our secure website or over the phone using Visa, Mastercard, or bank draft. You can also mail your check or money order if you prefer, but the most convenient payment option is to get set up on automatic payments. This service uses your Visa, MasterCard or bank-draft to pay your bill at the same time every month and using automatic payment qualifies you for a recurring discount of .3¢/kWh. All of our payment options are available without any "convenience fees".

What happens when my contract period expires?
You can choose to enter another fixed energy rate contract at current rates, or the account will go into month to month status with the current variable rate. Your service will not be automatically terminated!

What if I miss a payment?
Our system sends email alerts letting you know that your invoice is available to view/pay online and reminders of your invoice due date. We will also make a reminder call. Should your payment not post by the due date, you will be sent a late payment notice and will have 10 days to process payment, otherwise the account will be subject to disconnection for non-payment.

Is there a penalty if I break the contract?
If you close the account or switch away prior to completion of your contract, you will be subject to a early termination fee. Our month to month variable rate plan has no long term commitment and no cancellation fee, but does require 30 day prior written notice to take effect. Please see your Terms of Service for further details.

Electric Rate Option as Your Retail Electric Provider - Industry Info

About Deregulation
Deregulation in Texas started back in 2002 for the retail market and made it possible for energy companies to compete for your business. The deregulation of electricity generation occurred in 1995 which made it possible for new energy sources to be introduced into our markets.

So now, in the state of Texas you have your Retail Electric Provider (REP), which is who you pay for your power, and your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP), which is responsible for servicing the lines that actually bring the power to your home. This is the reason you call your TDSP and not your REP when a service interruption occurs. Your TDSP determined automatically according to where you live since the state is divided among several companies.

Your REP is responsible for purchasing energy from available suppliers on your behalf. The price variation among REP companies can be directly attributed to the buying power they have in the marketplace, balanced out with their operating expenses.

What it Means to You
With new sources of energy in the market everybody wins! The environment gets a little cleaner and the customer has more choices, which is always a good thing. The deregulation of the retail market has created competition among companies which leads to lower prices and better service for the consumer.

Industry Background and Deregulation Facts
About Electric Rate Energy

Industry Background

The deregulation of electricity began with the separation of the industry into three parts:

The production of electricity at power plants across the state was deregulated in 1995.

Transmission and Distribution Service Providers (TDSPs) are wire and pole companies, responsible for ensuring electricity is delivered efficiently and safely

The Retail Electric Providers (REPs), are responsible for selling electricity, generating bills and providing customer service

People have the choice to pick between many companies who will be their electricity provider

Getting Electricity has 3 components.

Generation

Transmission and Distribution (getting it into your house).

Retail Electricity Provider

Generation:

Process of converting non–electrical energy to electricity

For electric utilities, it is the first process in the delivery of electricity to consumers.

There are different sources of conversion, but in the State of Texas the number one source is Natural Gas.

Electricity prices are tied directly to the cost of Natural Gas in the open market.

Costs are rising – Time to Lock In?

The reason Natural Gas prices affect the electricity prices in Texas is due to the kind of generation plants we use here. 47 % of these plants are Natural Gas power plants and the rest are primarily coal.

Transmission:

Transmission and getting it to your house is done by your local utility or TDSP – they own the wires and poles.

So, no matter who you buy the electricity through, a portion of your money is going to go to the Utility (transmission and distribution).

The TDSP is responsible for reading your meter You also call the Utility if there is a blackout.

In Houston, the TDSP in (Centerpoint Energy). EVERY REP – including Reliant – uses the same TDSP.

The TDSP charges are the same NO MATTER WHICH REP the customer uses.
Retail Electricity Providers (REP's) – Electric Rate

A company that sells electricity to customers, provides accurate billing of usage, and provides customer service of the account.

All retail electric providers must be certified to do business by the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

We all sell the same electricity! We all are governed by the same laws (the Pubic Utilities commission or PUC).

Electric Rate offers competitive electric rates and plans that are a very inexpensive compared to TXU or Reliant.

Customer Service and Price are the main differentiators.

REPs do not deliver electricity or maintain the wires and poles – that's done by the TDSPs (Oncor or Centerpoint).

Keep your heating and air conditioning unit in top shape by regularly replacing or cleaning your air filter.

This practice will save you money not only because it reduces your energy usage, but it will extend the life of your unit and help avoid costly repairs. Other benefits include increased air quality and less noise, since unit laboring to get air through a dirty filter has to work harder and the added resistance creates more noise in your home.

You should always follow your manufacturer's guidelines regarding type, size and change frequency which will keep any warranties you may have valid.

Also make sure your filter fits properly. A filter with gaps around it is like not having one at all, and that will reduce the life of your unit. Happy filtering!!

Using compact fluorescent light bulbs, CFL's for short, instead of regular incandescent bulbs can make a big difference. How big?
Energy Star reports that if every home in America replaced just one light bulb in their home with an Energy Star CFL, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes per year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. For more information you can visit: www.energystar.gov.

While these bulbs may cost a little more they save you money in the long run since they take less energy to run and last longer.

It is never fun to have to replace an appliance, but if you are in the market you should consider choosing one that is Energy Star rated.

This is important because you need to understand that the price of the unit is just part of the equation. If you save money on a less efficient unit and spend more on energy and water bills you end up paying more, 10-50 percent more, in the long run versus finding a unit with the Energy Star Rating.

Try disabling the "heated dry" option on your automatic dishwasher to save energy.
When the wash cycle is over you just open the door, pull out the racks and let the dishes dry. If you time it to start the washer in the evening, you can let them dry overnight without having to pay for it!

You can limit your energy waste in a major way by installing a programmable thermostat in your home.
For most people, remembering to change your thermostat setting before leaving on vacation is a no-brainier but there are other times when your heating and cooling usage could be reduced. The problem being that it is hard to remember to adjust these settings while juggling all of life's challenges, so save yourself some headache and cash by placing your home on auto-pilot!

If your home is empty for much of the day, you can adjust your settings to keep the heating or cooling from coming on as often. And these units are smart enough to have everything back to your comfort level by the time you get home and have separate settings for the weekend and weekdays so you can just "set it and forget it"!

The average family can easily waste thousands of gallons of water per year waiting for the water to get hot. In addition, it takes a good portion of your current energy usage, gas and electric, to heat the water and keep it hot.

You can save money, time, and hassle by having an instant hot water system installed in your home. These systems do not use energy to heat the water until you ask for it and it is, as the name would lead you to believe, instant.

The condenser coils of your refrigerator are typically found behind the kick plate or toe grill (under the doors on the front, right by the floor) and serve to filter the air going to the cold producing conductor. If these coils become blocked by hair, dust or dirt, they can cause the unit to function less efficiently, lose effectiveness or overheat.

It only takes a few minutes to clean and can save you time, money and a whole unit full of food!

Pull off the front grill or plate (sometimes requires removal of a screw or two, depending on model)

Gently clean coils using a bottle brush or your vacuum's narrow nozzle or brush attachment

Replace grill or plate

Most manufacturers recommend doing this every 6 months to ensure optimal performance. For households with pets, you may need to consider more frequent cleanings.

Be sure to caulk and weather strip your home to save energy and keep your home comfortable.

Common and often overlooked areas of airflow include:

Plumbing on exterior walls, typically under cabinets

Around electrical outlets on exterior walls

Under door thresholds

Around attic pull-down ladders

Around doors

Around windows

You can find a multitude of caulking and self-adhesive weather stripping, typically a foam tape which compresses to seal, at your local home center or hardware store to address these leaking areas. Around plumbing under counters you can use expanding foam, which comes in a can, to fill the gaps which keep out the air and unwanted critters!

Also check the caulking on the exterior of your windows to be sure it is not cracking and providing an entry point for air, water or pests.

Change the temperature on your hot water heater to 120 degrees, which is hot enough to do the job without overheating and wasting money. This is also a good practice for households with children to help avoid scalding.

To avoid heat loss, try insulating your hot water heater.

For electric hot water heaters, you can wrap it in a fiberglass insulation blanket, but be careful not to cover the thermostat.

For natural gas or oil hot water heaters, you can wrap it in a fiberglass insulation blanket, but be careful not to cover the water heater's top, bottom, thermostat, or burner compartment.

You can also insulate the first six feet of the hot and cold water pipes connected to the water heater.

Regardless of your type of unit always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and when in doubt, get professional help. Insulation for the heater and pipes can be found at your local home center or hardware store.

Closing vents in unused rooms can do more harm than good. The extra pressure can cause leaks in your duct work, which will be much worse than heating or cooling an unused room.

The condenser on your AC system is the outside unit and needs to be kept clear of debris, high grass, etc. You should never build a fence around these units as they need plenty of space to get airflow. When possible, locate under shade to keep it from having to work as hard and if not, you can always make shade by planting a tree nearby...but not too close.

When the summer heat sets in, nothing feels better than dropping that AC all the way down to 50 degrees. For those who live in the real world, ceiling fans, box fans, or a fan on a stand can make it feel cooler by 10 degrees, making it possible to keep your AC at a sensible setting.

Consider planning your meals where several things can be cooked in the oven at the same time. Many saucepans can be put into the oven up to a limit (check your manufacturers specifications) or you can use ceramic/glass containers to heat vegetables by placing them in the oven for the last 10-15 minutes of cooking your entree.

When your HVAC unit is running well it uses less energy, and lower energy use means bigger savings for you on your monthly utility bills. Also, do not discount the importance of preventative maintenance to avoid the major expense of replacing your unit prematurely. A small leak now could lead to a full replacement if not caught in time.

Spring is the ideal time to get your system looked over since you can prevent some small problems from getting bigger, and more costly, later on. The timing is also better now since you will avoid the waits and higher costs associated with peak summertime usage, since most people wait for a problem to occur.

Here are a few easy way to cut down on your energy costs while doing laundry:

Always try to run full loads but, if you need to do a smaller one, use the water level adjustment feature to match the load.

Wash in cold where it calls for warm and warm or cold where it calls for hot. The less hot water you use, the less energy consumed.

Rinse in cold water.

Dry clothes on a line when possible but if using an automatic dryer, do not over-dry. This practice wastes energy and puts undue stress on your garments. If your dryer has an automatic moisture sensor, make sure it is enabled.

Clean the lint filter before every dryer load, which will keep the unit running efficiently.
